7 Things That Make Your House Harder to Clean Than You Think
There’s a reason Martha Stewart has made an entire career out of keeping a home well. And with The Martha Way bringing her approach to home keeping back into the spotlight, we’re here for it.
But here’s something professional cleaners know: keeping a house clean isn’t just about cleaning more. Sometimes the way your home is set up—or a few everyday habits—can make cleaning much harder than it needs to be.
Here are seven things we see all the time.
1. Too Much Stuff on the Counters
A bathroom counter covered in skincare, toothbrushes and hair products takes significantly longer to clean than a mostly clear one. The same goes for kitchen counters, dressers and nightstands.
You don’t have to become a minimalist. A tray, basket or drawer that lets you quickly clear a surface can make everyday cleaning much easier.
2. Letting Buildup Become a “Later” Problem
Soap scum, hard water, grease and grime are much easier to remove when they're relatively new. Given enough time, they can turn into stubborn buildup that requires different products, techniques and a whole lot more scrubbing.
Maintenance really is easier than restoration.
3. Using Too Much Cleaning Product
More cleaner does not necessarily mean more clean.
Using too much product can leave residue behind, making floors feel sticky, counters look streaky and surfaces attract dirt faster. Follow dilution instructions and remember that sometimes less really is more.
4. Having the Wrong Product for the Surface
Natural stone, hardwood, stainless steel, glass and tile don't all want the same thing.
One of the biggest differences between simply cleaning something and properly caring for it is knowing what you're cleaning. Before grabbing an all-purpose cleaner, make sure it's actually appropriate for the material.
5. Keeping Too Much in the Shower
If you have 14 bottles sitting around your shower, we're not judging you—but we are telling you they're making that shower harder to clean.
Every bottle has to be moved to properly clean underneath it, and all those little ledges and containers create places for soap residue and moisture to collect. A shower caddy or streamlined collection makes a surprisingly big difference.
6. Ignoring the Little Things Until They're Big Things
Wiping up the spill today takes 30 seconds. Scrubbing the dried-on mystery spot three weeks from now does not.
The easiest homes to maintain aren't necessarily the homes where someone is constantly cleaning. They're usually homes where little messes are handled before they have the chance to become big ones.
7. Expecting a Maintenance Clean to Fix Months of Buildup
This is a big one.
Regular cleaning is designed to maintain a home that's already at a manageable baseline. If there's significant grease, hard-water buildup, heavy dust, neglected baseboards or grime in areas that haven't been cleaned for months, the home may need a deep clean first.
Once that buildup is removed, regular professional cleaning becomes much more efficient—and your home stays consistently cleaner between visits.
A Cleaner Home Doesn't Have to Mean More Cleaning
One thing we love about the renewed interest in homekeeping is the idea that caring for your home doesn't have to mean chasing perfection. A few good systems, the right products and regular maintenance can make an enormous difference.
